Earpods vs Airpods Headphones
Not as often of a conversation now due to external factors, but at one point this was considered a difficult decision to be made, wired vs wireless headphones or more specifically earpods vs airpods. This is something I have to back and forth with personally so I consider myself experienced enough to give insight.
Why wired? Price! Price alone is one of the biggest catalysts for why people choose earpods over airpods. The cost to replace a single individual item from the set costs around ⅓ of the initial buying price, whereas if you were to lose the entire set of earpods it is cheaper to buy the entire set again than a single airpod or charging case. $69 for a single airpod replacement compared to the $19 cost for a set of wired earpods. Making them much convenient for students or those on a budget. Replacement airpod price
Another reason is the plug and play adaptability with earpods as they just need to be plugged in universally with all types of devices with ease. Earpods even have the ability to connect to televisions, eliminating bluetooth compatibility issues and allowing users to listen immediately. The quality of the audio isn't allowed to be used to its fullest capability because bluetooth compresses audio so High-Res/Lossless Audio isn't used.
One of if not the biggest reason is the lack of battery dependency. Unlike airpods which need to be charged regularly, and naturally the maximum battery capacity depreciates over time. In scenarios where you might not have access to a charger or the battery dies faster than expected is exactly what these headphones are meant for. Not to mention the times when wired headphones have saved everyone's phone from falling at least once.
Why wireless? No cords! You no longer had to have your phone with you anymore, making it much easier to workout or maintain practical mobility. Another marketing tactic was that you no longer had to untangle your headphones before you could use them.
Apple's integration with their products works very well so airpods can connect to watches on top of all the regular listening devices. “Hey Siri” is another benefit which allows users to adjust the volume, answer phone calls or change songs with ease all from using the airpods themselves.
With Apple's airpod pros they have the noise cancellation feature, as well as a transparency mode. But that's not it they also come with spatial audio features and that can be managed through the pressure based controls. The microphone is also improved with the airpods compared to the earpods and has noise reduction capability.
If you’re willing to fork out a bit more depending on which version you get the new models come with capabilities such as live translation with the airpods 4 with noise cancelation $179 and the airpods pro 3 $249. The pro 3’s also provide “Heart rate sensing during workouts”. The most luxurious being the airpods max costing a total of $549 featuring lossless audio through USB-C and 20 hours of listening on a single charge. Headphone Prices
Now choosing a winner:
Budget: Now for budget there is a clear winner the earpods are going to get the job done period. But Apple has prices and options of airpods ranging from $129-$549, so if there had to be a winner it would go to the earpods.
Practicality/Lifestyle: Depending on your lifestyle it would be important to choose the type that would be most practical in your lifestyle and how you live. Those who live with a very active on the go routine, the wireless no cord situation makes much more sense. Multitasking can be much easier when tasks like calling clients or skipping ahead in messages can be done with your voice and your hands are still available for action. Now for a technical winner it would go to the airpods.
Audio needs: On top of the lifestyle you live, the type of quality and consistency that pertains to each user's needs goes into deciding. If you are more focused on online meetings, gaming, or watching videos, earpods are ideal due to zero delay and no compression of the file. Airpods however suit those who may be in crowded areas often and need the features such as noise cancellation or spatial audio, or utilize the phone call features. My favorite and most used features with the airpods are the noise cancellation when at the gym or switching to transparency mode when listening to lectures in person. The spatial audio provides audio from different angles whether you prefer for it to be following or set at specific angles as if the audio was coming from different directions. Again for a winner the vote would go to the airpods for versatility.
Long term value: When discussing long term value it’s important to take into account the possibility of losing an airpod or losing the case, which increases the total cost far above initial price. Now with the earpods since it is all one piece it’s harder to lose them and far cheaper to replace. Ultimately though considering how long the airpods will last you with even decent care the charge seems to not waiver regardless of use in my experience so I give the edge to the airpods.
Final verdict: Now the final vote ending in a 3-1 in terms of the airpods they are the clear winner. Although it’s investment because you're spending more money on a nicer product the earpods are a really good product to get you buy if connecting to audio is the sole necessity. The airpods are perfect for use at the gym when I need audio without cords being in my way or when studying to block out the noise. The earpods are perfect for a lack of charge or when bluetooth capabilities are incapable, or even in situations where one airpod might not work.So with the use of an alternative case and earpods I feel experienced enough to decide that the airpods are the winner for me and I consider them worth the purchase for those conveniences.
